Mama Tau is luxury Limpopo accommodation, situated on a hilly, private reserve of about 3000 hectares. The name Mama Tau means 'Mother of Lions' in Northern Sotho. This Limpopo accommodation, located in the Waterberg bushveld, is home to a wide variety of bird species and to the rare White Lion.
For centuries, rumours of mysterious White Lion had been circulating in South Africa. Legend says that the white fur represented the good that is found in all creatures. They share the same Latin name, 'Pathera leo krugeri', with all the other subspecies of South African Lion.
These White Lion come from the Kruger National Park area and roam around in a large fenced part of Mama Tau's private reserve, along with the Brown Cape Lion that also live here. This Limpopo accommodation has established a White Lions Breeding Project. The first cub to be born and bred from this project was born on 27 May 2005. His name is Sebaka, which means 'chance' in Northern Sotho.
